Visit Angel Island

Angel Island State Park, the largest natural island in the SF Bay, offers some of the best views of the surrounding Bay Area. With great hiking trails and many other recreational opportunities readily available, it is truly a hidden gem in the midst of the urban Bay Area. Angel Island is truly a walk through time! Beginning with the earliest inhabitants, the Coast Miwok native tribe, a safe refuge and supply stop for Spanish explorers, as well as the U.S. Immigration Station from 1910 to 1940, which processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants. It was also the home to a Nike missile base until the final departure of the military in the 60's when Angel Island became park lands!

PLAN YOUR TRIP

Explore the Headlands

The iconic view of the Golden Gate Bridge with San Francisco in the background is taken from the Marin Headlands which is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The GGNRA, at 75,000+ acres, is one of the largest urban national parks in the world, extending for miles on both the north and south sides of the Golden Gate with a plethora of recreational activities, viewpoints, and miles of hiking and biking paths. You might also enjoy walk across the Golden Gate Bridge - it is 1.7 miles across in one direction and it can be windy, so bundle up. There is a great local brand coffee shop, Equator Coffee and gift shop at the southern end in San Francisco.

Hike or Bike Mt. Tam

Mount Tamalpias, known locally as Mt Tam, has beautiful 360° views, at the 2,500-foot peak, from the Pacific to the SF Bay. With miles and miles of trails that ribbon the mountain, crossing redwood valleys, creeks, waterfalls, and wide-open grasslands - it's been treasured turf for hikers, cyclists + equestrians since the 1880s. Locals will tell you that mountain biking as we know it today was invented by Joe Breeze, Tom Ritchey, Gary Fisher, and Charlie Cunningham who built some of the first modern mountain bikes. If you'd rather take in the views without the bike or hike, a bus runs from Stinson Beach up to Pantoll Ranger Station and along the Panoramic Highway.
